River Forest Campers: Meet at the RF Metra Station, south tunnel entrance at 8:30am. Campers will arrive back at the RF Metra at 3:18pm on the north side of the station. There will be 4 instructors and we have 12 camp spots.
For Campers in the Winfield area, camp will run from 10:30am-1:30pm.
This is a 1-day camp at the estate of Ron & Maryanne Barzso in Winfield IL on June 14. They are retired school teachers who have been tending a woodland paradise for the past 46 years, complete with hiking paths, a human size fairy house, gardens, wildflowers and wonder. It's nestled into 462 acres of forest preserve on the border between Winfield & West Chicago.
Here’s the plan:
We’ll enjoy a guided tour through winding trails and learn to identify plants, their attributes and stories. Part of this land has never been built on and is rich with Native American history.
Every camper will receive a journal for the day to record and draw about what they discover. We’ll stop at the top of the hill where Ron & Maryanne have set up an very lovely resting spot for lunch. (Campers will need to pack a lunch and bring a water bottle)
After lunch, campers will make a leather foraging satchel perfect for collecting treasures or berry picking. Then, we'll finish the day with an excerpt from the classic book "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George, a timeless story of a boy named Sam who learns courage & independence in the Catskill Mountains...It’s such a good book that they will want to rush to the library to get a copy to finish reading it!
Parents are welcome to attend and free. This camp will be for ages 7+. 6 year olds may attend, accompanied by a parent.
There is no rain date for this event, so if weather does not cooperate, we'll cancel and refund registrations and try again later in the summer or fall.
